This year Spain still stands a betting chance of winning, with strikers, Fernando Torres and David Villa in the squad. That combined with goalie Iker Casillas and midfielder Xabi Alonso, Spain is hoping to be the first country to win back to back Euro Cups and prove that they are still the greatest in world.

This should be a difficult test since Europe has many countries with world-class teams in top form prepared to take that award away from Spain and Italy, England (who have still never won a European Championship) and France look strong this year. The riveting part of the Euro 2012 is that any team could possibly win. n 2004, Greece took the title in the final match against host Portugal and amazed the soccer world. Also last year Turkey and Russia showed they were home to strong squads, both reaching the semi-finals round but losing to Germany and Spain respectively. Who knows, maybe this year another first time champion could come away with the glory of being the greatest in Europe.

The Euro 2012 event is being hosted jointly by Poland and the Ukraine are hosting the games and it is reported that the European Tournament is already having a great impact on the economies of both areas. The last European Cup was also jointly hosted by the countries of Austria and Switzerland to great acclaim as Spain beat Germany one to zero to take their second championship (their first was in 1964).

Tickets have recently gone on sale and many analysts say, with all the excitement surrounding the games and superstars in the game today, that this could be the most lucrative European Championship ever. Already major matches are selling out with the hope of supporting their countries to incredible semi-final and final matches.

As the qualifying matches begin, it should be thrilling to see who makes it to the next stage. Last year, everyone remembers how England failed to qualify which created huge shockwaves in the world of soccer news, highlighting how teams not previously thought to be a factor, like Slovakia or Croatia, can definitely impact a championship. While nobody could predict this soccer results, the stage has been set for an excellent tournament.

In recent times the Azzuri have been less than impressive. After a less than impressive qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup finals in which an equaliser in Ireland pushed them into the final after a sequence of drawn games, Italy has faced growing disappointment. Italy’s at the finals continued to dissatisfy fans, especially while playing Paraguay and New Zealand.

Despite Italy’s strong reputation for defense, their lack of imagination in attack was painful. Italy felt a loss of Pirlo’s unmistakable guile, Totti’s technique, and Toni’s form, and will moreover struggle to find stars to put in the Italy soccer jersey.Inter Milan won both Serie A and Coppa Italia in 2010 prior to lifting the European Champions Leauge with a 2-0 game, beating out Bayern Munich in Madrid. Disappointingly, Inter failed to contribute any players to the World Cup Squad for Italy. Inter’s first team hardly ever contained an Italian player for most of the season. Only youngsters Davide Santon and Mario Balotelli made a lasting contribution and they were used mainly from the substitutes bench and neither made the final squad for the summer’s showpiece event in South Africa.

If we look to the rest of Serie A, it becomes apparent that the giants of the league are facing the same conundrum. AC Milan have more Italians in their first team squad, but the vast majority are approaching or beyond 30 years of age. Juventus boasts a few Italian players, including Chiellni, Giovinco and De Ceglie, who all back up the magnificent Marchisio in the midfield. The vast majority of Juventus Italian nationals, certainly those who would be considered for the first team, are also 30+.

In recent times, players on the Italian national team are less likely to come from the top few teams in Serie A, and players are instead being chosen from the groups which rank just below this group. The current Italian World Cup squad boasts 6 players from Juventus (3 under the age of 30), 3 from Milan (0 under 30), one from Roma, but contains 3 players from Napoli, 2 from Sampdoria, 2 from Genoa,  2 from Fiorentina, one each from Bari, Cagliari and Udinese, plus one from Al Ahli from the UAE (Fabio Cannavaro).

The trend is not stopping anytime soon, thanks to the ages of top players this may become a worry for both Azzuri managers and the Italian FA alike. A number of these Italian players are not currently participating in the Champions League every season, a wounding phenomenon that will fiercely impact performance abilities when such players are on the pitch.

Italy does have hope for the future, with players like Domenico Criscito, Salvatore Bocchetti, Giampaolo Pazzini, and Leonardo Bonucci as up and coming players. Sadly, though, these players are likely to gain their football education not on the pitches of Old Trafford, Allianz Arena, Bernebeu and Nou Camp but on those of Palermo, Bari, Cagliari, and Lazio.

The shift is a nuisance to the Italian side and a change that needs to be addressed. Can the heroes of a country really be considered heroes if they don’t have their hearts in a national cause?

The problem for Arsenal at the moment is that youngsters like Fran Merida and Jack Wilshere cannot expect much of a chance in first grade games due to the fact Arsenal’s first team squad is well off for talented midfielders, has seen their movement into first grade limited to only meaningless Champions league or Carling cup games.

The problem facing Arsene Wenger is that players like Wilshere and Merida are now ready for a more prominent first team role at the club. With a number of stars all vying for a place in the midfield including Diarra, Diaby, Narsi, Rosicky, Fabregas, and players who can also play in the midfield if needed to like Arshavin, the midfield seems like a very unlikely place for young players to step up into the team.

The unfortunate thing at the moment, the first grade team is dying for strikers at the moment, if Wilshere or Merida had been strikers they would be straight into the first team, due to injuries to Robin Van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner who are Arsenals lead strikers.

It seems likely that Wilshere will be taking a loan move away from Arsenal in the near future. Turf Moor have shown interest in moving the youngster, but seeing as manager Owen Coyle is about to move to the Bolton Wanderers, it seems unlikely that the Clarets will take their interest any further while their managerial situation remains unresolved. A loan to another Premier League team is what Wilshere seems likely to do. Rumours today have surfaced that Wilshere is championing a loan move to the club he supported as a boy, West Ham, for the rest of the season. Arsene Wenger stated that Wilshere needs to play more first grade games for experience so the transfer seems likely to take place.

The situation surrounding Fran Merida is more complicated. Transferred from Barcelona to Arsenal as a youngster in a similar fashion to Cesc Fabregas, the youngster has drawn many comparisons with his Spanish counterpart. Arsenal’s first side however has been to hard for Fran Merida to crack despite his obvious talent, with his contract due to expire in June this year, and his unwillingness to resign with the club Fran Merida has decided that he will join the club he supported as a boy; Atletico Madrid, but unlike Wilshere, he will make his move permanently on July 1st 2010 so he will probly never been seen in the Arsenal away jersey again.

Although Arsenal’s midfield is hard to crack, It’ can’t feel good for Arsenal fans to see young players leave the club to make a name for themselves for another team, albeit temporarily in Wilshere’s case, simply because competition for places in the squad, in their position, is particularly strong.

Not that this will be a problem for Bob Bradley and his son Michael during this summer’s World Cup Finals in South Africa.  One exception to the rule seems to be the Bradley family, US Coach Bob Bradley and his son Michael, who will compete in the World Cup Finals together this summer in South Africa.

Bob welcomed his son into the world while working as the coach of the Princeton University soccer team.   When Michael was young, his father received a position coaching the MLS Chicago Fire,  and Michael was raised in Palatine, gaining a love for the game that rivalled that of his father.  After Bob gained a position with the Chicago Fire, Michael grew up in Palatine, and began to enjoy the sport immensely.

After an impressive career in Junior leagues, Michael signed up with the MLS Superdraft in 2004 and was selected 36th overall by the New York Metrostars, who just so happened to be coached by his father.   Michael’s second year was big for both father and son, with a proud Bob leading his team into playoffs and Michael heading in the goal against Chivas USA that got them there.

His energetic performances at the heart of midfield as an anchor for Metrostars had caught the eye in foreign climes and in January 2006, New York Metrostars allowed Bradley to leave the club when he was sold to SC Heerenveen of Holland.   Bradley quickly impressed the Dutch, playing a key role in the club achieving a place in the UEFA cup and, the following season, scoring an impressive 20 goals in 2007-2008.

Bradley’s success soon attracted the attention of bigger clubs wanting him in their soccer jersey, like Birmingham City, who wanted to sign Bradley but could not due to the relegation handed down from the Premier League. Instead , Borussia Moenchengladbach picked up midfielder Bradley, who has proven to be an asset, playing 58 games in the Bundesliga and racking up seven goals.

Michael Bradley’s success so far exceeded expectations that most took it for granted that he would be promoted to the National Team (and he was). Bob Bradley began coaching the team in 2006, leading Michael to become  the core of the US midfield, setting up plays so that offensive players such as Landon Donovan can exercise the freedom to get towards the goal.

The US team is thankful for the father and son duo as they head on to the World Cup Finals in South Africa this summer.

The fact that Ryan Giggs is beginning to age, and the fact that veteran midfielder Paul Scholes will only have his name on soccer memorabilia soon has surely brought to Alex Fergusons attention that some expensive midfielders are required to boost the team.

Signing the talented Hamsik, who is also a target for Chelsea and was reported to be on Liverpool’s radar earlier in the season, would certainly give United an added attacking threat from the midfield. Starting his career with Slovan Bratislava the Slovakian international quickly proved his ability and was bought by Brescia. Transferring to Napoli for 5.5m Euros after dominating the midfield at Brescia scoring 10 goals from the midfield.

Since 2007, Hamsik’s efforts in Serie A have established him as one of the best midfielders in the world. Managing to score 25 goals in 81 games Hamsik’s form has been some of the best in the league. After giving Napoli their first win over Juventus in Turin in 21 years with an excellent two goals Hamsik has quickly became known as the best midfielder in Serie A.

Hamsik’s performances have been equally impressive for his national side, Slovakia. He has been the driving force behind the countries qualification for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa and he is being touted as being one of the major stars to emerge from the tournament in the summer.

Interest and a big offer from major teams may not be enough however with sporting director Riccardo Bigon stating:

“Manchester United are after Hamsik? If we rejected the rumours regarding a friend like [Carlo] Ancelotti and his Chelsea, it is obvious we also reject these rumours.”

These comments have since been substantiated by Napoli chairman Aurielo De Laurentiis who confirmed:

“Many clubs have requested Hamsik, it’s true, but he will stay with us for the long-term”

Manchester United hope to make their move in Summer and if Napoli’s stance will remain the same is still unknow. Whether Napoli really plans to keep Hamsik into the future only time will tell, with not a lot of cash in the club it can be hard to see them not be at least tempted to sell the player if the offer is right.

Chelsea’s desperation to buy players may push any deals between the two clubs away. With Carlo Ancelotti given the go ahead to spend £25m on a player by Roman Abramovich in January they might beat Manchester United to the punch
