The Five Players Who Make Chelsea Tick

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Chelsea’s squad is so packed with talent you may claim it’s hard to find the players that make the team work. In this article we take a look at five Chelsea players who seem to hold an inordinate amount of influence on how the team performs.

1. JOHN TERRY (England, Central defender)

Captaining both Chelsea and England John Terry sets the standard for the other players to adhere to. A skilful and brave defender, showing technically sound style and a great amount of skill. Not afraid to lead by example and always managers to be a danger for teams set pieces, you could not find a better player to captain your club and country.

2. ASHLEY COLE  (England, Left back)

Every time he lines up against the Gunners he may be booed openly by Arsenal fans, but despite their bile, Ashley Cole is still, arguably, the best left back in world soccer. At times he may struggle for confidence and form, but at his best his marauding runs down the left and quality balls into the box are only matched by his ability to shut down some of the world’s best players. In games against him the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been kept relatively quiet. That’s not luck, not many other left backs could do the job.

3. MIKAEL ESSIEN (Ghana, Central midfielder)

Essien’s injury last season showed how sorely he could be missed, despite the team being filled with outstanding midfielders. Essien gives the midfield wonderful balance. His energy, work rate and defensive skills are first class, but he is also a technically gifted soccer player of great intelligence. With a powerful shot from a distance and the ability to go forward at the right time making him an asset to the team. His role within the team defiantly makes the 24.4 million pounds it cost to transfer him seem like a bargin.

4. FRANK LAMPARD (England, Central Midfielder)

Every team needs a midfielder like Lampard who can weigh in with plenty of goals, if they are to be successful. Lampard is one of the best around. He has shown a great return to form under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti and as a result his goal tally has been increasing dramatically. His accurate shooting from distance, willingness to join in with attacks and link play with Chelsea’s wide players and strikers are a vital source of attacking strength for the team.

5. DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast, Attacker)

Considered by many to be the best striker in the world at the moment, and its hard to argue the point considering his current form. Didier Drogba wearing the 09/10 Chelsea jersey makes all defenders fear the upcoming game. He may be known for his ability to fall over during tackles and arguing with officials and opposing players but no goalkeeper wants him with the ball when he’s playing well. His presence, goals and power are a key element of Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea and at times this season, he has carried the team on his back. His form is vital for Chelsea if they are to end Manchester United’s dominance of the Premier league.

Is Michael Owen Still In The Team Next Season?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

The move of Michael Owen from Newcastle United to Manchester last Summer was unexpected and surprising, mainly due to Michael’s injury prone history.

Experts were left scratching their head at this decision by Sir Alex. After Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer The general consensus was that a star would jump into the new Manchester United jersey to take over for him. however, United got Luis Valencia from Wigan and Michael Owen. A player who, for the past 5 years has had injury problem after injury problem as well as inconsistent fitness and form. The fact that he is a former Liverpool player only adds insult to injury. Their were a few unhappy faces from Manchester United fans when the transfer was announced.

When the finer details of the agreement were released it became clear that once again, the shrewd Scot had been canny. Michael Owen is intended to be used from the bench and is on a pay as you play deal at Manchester United. He would not be expected to bear the lone striking responsibilities, instead he would just assist when needed.

A slow start for Owen was not helped by the fact that he hardly featured in many games and if he did, he was a late substitute. Michael Owen’s last minute goal against Manchester City showed the role Alex Ferguson had planned for him in the team. This goal was expected to kick start more involvement from Owen in the team, their was even talk about a place in the England soccer team if he could find consistent goals.

Owen has not managed to continue his form however. Another two goals has given Owen four this season from 18 games, which is not great statically despite the fact that in many games he was a substitute, There seems to be an increasing feeling that Owen’s long term stay at Manchester United is looking shaky.

Certainly, in terms of forwarding Owen’s hopes of regaining his place in the England squad, the move hasn’t worked out well for the striker. Fabio Capello has stated that his players need to be fit and playing well consistently in order to play for England.Over the past few years Owen  has managed to be neither of these things. However it should be known that Capello doesn’t seem to apply this rule to all of England’s strikers, Emile Heskey looks like a certainty in the team regardless of his performance at Aston Villa.

So for the time being, Owen’s wonderful last minute goal against City has been the high point of the experiment so far. It is hard to see that Sir Alex will want it to continue much beyond the current season unless the England striker can find form and goals in greater abundance and force his way into the managers reckoning, much in the way youngster Darron Gibson is doing. Whether Owen has the ability and level of fitness to do that remains questionable and as such, it seems likely that Sir Alex’s gamble, in the long run, may not pay off.
