Barcelona Draws Against Villarreal

Monday, January 30th, 2012

FC Barcelona travelled down to Villarreal on Sat. night for week 21 of this season’s Spanish League. The yellow submarines as they are known are way down in the relegation section and things have not been looking too good for them. Out of 19 matches played before meeting Barcelona they'd won just 4, with seven draws and 8 losses.

In comparison, FC Barcelona had 13 wins, with 5 draws and simply a single loss. Also take a look at the amount of goals: just 18 for Villarreal compared to Barcelona’s 59. So on paper, it ought to have been an easy win for Barcelona.

But soccer isn’t fought on paper, it’s fought on the pitch and in the event, there were few chances to score. Villarreal’s goalkeeper seem to be in top form, and the defence of the yellow submarines was solid. The first half offered few possibilities for Barca, and while Villarreal had some chances to attack the Barcelona goal nothing eventually came of it.

When the teams came out of the second half Villarreal were looking slightly more important, but it was Barcelona who controlled the play. Nonetheless despite having high possession of the ball, they were never ready to do anything with it. It wasn't really until the last 10 minutes of the match Barca had some good occasions to score but they were unable to score and the match stopped goalless.

The result was displeasing for Barcelona, who were already trailing Real Madrid by 5 points. With Real Madrid winning their match on Saturday it now leaves Barcelona 7 points behind and it’s starting to look as if the la liga title is going is out of their reach. While allegedly they are not out of the race, it'll take some bad results from Madrid to turn that around for them. It has still to be seen whether bad luck will strike Madrid so hard.

FC Barcelona’s First Season Under Joan Laporta

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

FC Barcelona is at present one of the greatest teams in the world, with a prize cupboard that is bursting with the silverware won over the course of the previous few years. While Bara might be intensely favored right now, they have been through a transformation of the previous few years.

Actually it'd be correct to say they've experienced a renaissance ever since Joan Laporta became president in 2003, and after him his former friend and now bitter enemy, Sandro Rossell.

When Laporta turned up at the club they hadn't won a major title since 1999 and the self-esteem of the squad had plummeted. He brought on board Frank Rijkaard as team coach, who after a slow start started winning matches; and his right hand man (at the time, till they slipped out and he resigned from the Barça board) Sandro Rossell used his contacts to sign Ronaldinho.

While the Brazilian player certainly had talent [*COMMA] he had not necessarily done much with it. Nonetheless he did show a lot of flare with FC Barcelona even if they were never making the turnaround required.

That turnaround occurred when Barça signed Edgar Davids for the second half the season. Whether it was his arrival at the club, or whether his arrival coincided with everything coming together is impossible to claim. What is certain though is that the club started winning game after game. And at last the downtrodden Barcelona rose up again and started to become the team it is today.

The club went from strength to strength after that, although Davids decided to revisit his old club after the half season loan. While he might have been missed, the fortunes of the club continued to boost and Barcelona won the second season under Laporta. After that the team continues to go ever upwards and unde Pep Guardiola were the 1st tea, to win the treble – la liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey.

Why Real Madrid needs to change its focus

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

It is a funny old game is football, or “soccer” as it is more usually known in North America. You just need to have a look at some of the current results in the Spanish League, where bitter rivals FC Barcelona and real Madrid are slugging it out, despite not essentially facing each other for the first time till December.

While both teams started out well, FC Barcelona slipped when what should have been a reasonably cushty win against Real Sociedad turned into a draw. And just when they needed something to show they had not lost that special something that they once again drew, this time against AC Milan in the Champs League, thanks to an injury time goal before the final whistle.

Critics straight away laid into FC Barcelona, pronouncing they’d lost their touch; two average results is all that it takes to call a crisis. However , they answered with an 8-0 win against Osasuna, their best result since the 90s, straight away silencing their critics again.

While it looked rosy for Barcelona, things all of a sudden went very wrong for Real Madrid. While they had won their first two matches and sat at the head of the classifications they then lost 1-0 against Levante, a team that should hardly be in the first division such is its poor state.

This is supposed to be Real Madrid’s year, the second season under Jose Mourinho. However , you can’t help thinking that his total concentrate on what Barcelona are doing is his greatest weakness. Fielding an under-strength squad against Levante showed big audacity, that's not in doubt.

But what will lose Real Madrid the league again this season isn’t what FC Barcelona does or does not do. It is down to how many points Real Madrid can gain, making absolutely certain that they beat groups like Levante and all the rest of the clubs at the base of La Liga. If Mourinho is to bring the success that Real Madrid desires he must shift his focus, fast.

Can “the special one” shrug off a poor start to the season?

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Jose Mourinho is well known for his psychological posturing against opponents in press meetings and regularly comes across as barely in charge of himself. Having won a major battle at Real Madrid in the dismissal of General manager Jorge Valdano, his toughest internal critic, and therefore securing more power for himself as Madrid’s coach this is the season he has to deliver the products.

Nevertheless while Madrid started well and we’re just a few matches in, his dream seems to have begun to disentangle. He has famously said that his 2nd season in any club is when he delivers, but with his entire focus appearing to be on arch-rival FC Barcelona he has just had 2 big reversals that he can ill afford.

First Real Madrid was beaten by Levante, a team that is the polar opposite to Real Madrid, with low paid players and a hardly functional team that's lucky to be in top flight Spanish football. And then they drew with Racing Santander, losing some imperative points which they may need in the long stretch.

A poll by Sporting newspaper AS which backs Madrid discovered that lots of its readers laid the blame totally at the feet of Mourinho; while seeking to shift the blame to referees and opposition players he has not managed to accept responsibility himself for what many consider a gloomy start. And we're starting to hear talk about another crisis year at Real Madrid.

Nonetheless how much of an emergency is it actually, when a team like Real Madrid comes second in the league after a much superior teams like Bara? While fans might be disappointed their side is still largely delivering the goods.

Mourinho’s big problem will be the patience of Florentino Perez, Madrid’s president. While he has backed “the special one” so far in his career at Madrid there will be a time when he will snap. Mourinho is Real Madrid’s eleventh coach in seven years, so the club doesn't flinch in making such changes. Can Real Madrid’s fortunes change before that occurs?

Who Are The Best Soccer Players In Spain’s La Liga?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

There are plenty of soccer superstars plying their trade in Spain’s top division, and it is rightly regarded as the number one domestic league in the world. Listed below are the players who are currently regarded as being the best in Spain…

Messi : Spearheading Barcelona’s treble winning team of 2008-09, Argentinean Lionel Messi continually dazzles Europe with his creativity and flair. Even though he is just 22, he is the current “World Player of the Year” and, if he remains injury free, he is likely to chalk up awards, goals and assists for many years to come.

Cristiano Ronaldo : Blistering pace and explosive power are what led to Ronaldo initially being signed by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson. Now playing for the mighty Real Madrid, Ronaldo is hoping to make as big an impact for el Madrid as he did in the famous red shirt of Man Utd.

David Villa : Playing for Valencia, who are not one of the most glamorous teams in the league, David Villa Sanchez (to give him his full name) boasts an absolutely outstanding goals to games ratio. He was the winner of the “Golden Boot” for Spain at Euro 2008 (which means that he scored more goals at the tournament than anyone else) and is expected in the near future to become Spain’s all time highest goal scorer. Equally dangerous with either foot, Villa has attracted a host of top clubs, who are all eager to land this prolific striker’s elusive signature.

Kaka : Brazilian midfielder Kaka, is a creative genius. Able to make pinpoint passes across the entire length of the field, or dribble past several players in a row, Kaka was the darling of AC Milan and led them to “Champions League” success in 2007. Now one of the jewels in Real Madrid’s crown, he aims to bring the La Liga title back to the Bernabau (where Real Madrid play their home games) after a few years absence.
